CGPA to Percentage: Which Formula Does Your University Use?
India's higher education system has no single standard for CGPA-to-percentage conversion. Every university calibrates its grading system independently, which means the same CGPA can represent different percentages depending on where you studied. This matters in practice: job applications, loan applications, higher study applications, and government eligibility criteria all ask for percentage — not CGPA.
The most widely accepted standard is AICTE's recommendation of multiplying CGPA by 9.5 for 10-point graded students. Most national companies follow this. But university-specific formulas produce meaningfully different results — an 8.0 CGPA yields 80% at Anna University (using × 10) versus 75.25% at VTU (using (CGPA − 0.75) × 10). That's a difference that matters for eligibility cutoffs.
